Governance at the Dementia Trust

Strong governance is at the heart of everything we do. It ensures we remain transparent, accountable, and focused on delivering lasting change for people affected by dementia.

The Dementia Trust is a registered charity with the Office of Scottish Charity Regulator. Our Board of Trustees provides overall leadership and oversight, setting the vision, approving strategy, and monitoring delivery.

Trustees meet regularly to review our progress, manage risk, and ensure funds are used responsibly. Their role is to act in the best interests of the charity, safeguarding our mission and ensuring we stay true to our values.

OUR STRUCTURE

Our governance framework includes:

  • Board of Trustees – responsible for overall direction and decision-making.

  • Committees and working groups – focused on specific areas such as grant-making, development, and governance. We have three committees which include Finance and Risk, Corporate Development and Grant Making. Each committee is Chair by a Trustee and consists of Trustees and advisers. Additionally, we have our Chair’s Committee who meet prior to each board meeting to ensure reporting is complete.

  • Advisers and Fellows – bringing additional expertise, insight, and challenge.

This structure allows us to balance robust oversight with space for innovation.

Trustees and Leadership

Our Trustees bring wide-ranging expertise – from health and social care, to business, academia, and lived experience of dementia. Together they guide the Trust’s work and hold the team to account.

Governance in action

Governance is not about box-ticking – it’s about ensuring that bold ideas translate into real impact. We align our governance with our ambitious strategy, which focuses on:

ENABLE

Funding innovation.

EMPOWER

Strengthening people and partners.

EDUCATE

Sharing learning and influencing practice.

“Strong governance gives us the confidence to be bold. By balancing rigour with creativity, our Board enables the Trust to back new ideas, champion changemakers and deliver lasting impact for people living with dementia.”
